The Advanced Placement Biology course is the equivalent of a two-semester college introductory biology course taken by biology majors during their first year. After showing themselves to be qualified on the AP Exam, some students, as college freshmen, are permitted to take upper-level biology courses or register for courses for which biology is a prerequisite.

Other students may have fulfilled a basic requirement for a laboratory-science course and will be able to undertake other courses to pursue their majors. The standards accepted for competency differ from college to college. Some other basic advantages of taking this course are having an opportunity to take a course which will help in the transition from high school to college level work in biology and an increase in the probability of being accepted at most universities, since success in AP courses demonstrates the capacity to handle college course work.

AP Biology includes those topics regularly covered in a college biology course. Topics are integrated throughout the course using the eight major themes from the AP Biology Curriculum Requirements. This course differs significantly from the usual high school biology course with respect to the kind of textbook used, the range and depth of topics covered, the kind of lab work done by students, and the time and effort required of students.

The textbooks used and the kinds of labs done are equivalent to those done by college students. Class will meet every other day for an additional laboratory mod; this block of time will allow students to complete all of the recommended labs for AP Biology as well as some additional labs.

Generally a pre-lab assignment must be completed before lab work can be performed. I generally try to take at least one field trip during the course of the school year which involves lab-related activities.Page 4 AP Biology: Exam Review Thinking Practice 1.
